Readers Digest pays for a thrift trip across eastern Indiana (Status: Picasso strikes again)

Readers Digest called me up to see if I would drive to Indianapolis for a photo shoot regarding the Picasso, to appear in their year end "miraculous" theme issue. They would pay my gas for the drive to Indy and back to Columbus so I decided to have an epic "pick" along the historic National Road (Route 40) through the thrifts of eastern Indiana and western Ohio; I will post the highlights over the course of the next week.  Wheeeeee, driving and thrifting fun!

First stop is the Plainfield Goodwill, located at 2600 East Main St. in Plainfield Indiana, just on west side of Indianapolis.
I spotted this cute set of orange and yellow, metal kitchen chairs for $14.99
There was also this retro wooden desk for $28.99.  This had obviously been made in someones home work shop
I only picked up four knives, two steak knives and a couple of Epic "Canoe" pattern butter knives, and a book on Depression glass for a friend who collects green depression glass
My next stop was the Goodwill Outlet West, located at 6650 W. Washington St. just a couple of miles east of Plainfield on the west side of Indy.
I have never seen a thrift store like this!  It was a huge space filled with ten foot by four foot shallow blue bins on wheels.
These bins get wheeled out and people dig through them for an hour, then the staff begin rolling them into the back room regardless of how many people are still digging.   Thus begins another round of bin wheeling; this happens all day!  Nothing is priced, it is all sold by the pound.
I found this vintage pop-up book in a bin full of clothes (more on the book in a latter post)
I also picked up this cool orange fiberglass chair in a bin full of assorted housewares.

My next post will be about a cool furniture resale store I stumbled on in the Fountain Square district of Indianapolis called Domi Style.
Farewell from the National Road!

  1. Wow, that Picasso thing was the gift that keeps on giving, wasn't it? What a great practically-free trip! I can't wait to hear more.
