Home town Hey-Wake find (Status: A pair in the hand is worth on in the wild)

I found this pair of Heywood Wakefield 304 end tables in a furniture resale shop located in a small town near my home town.
These were not super cheap but I have been watching these since October and was able to get 15% off so, it was a good deal.  I can't believe these stuck around for so long; A pair of homemade HW 308 knock offs sold out of this shop for twice the price of this real HW pair.
They look really nice from a distance, and even pretty close they look decent.  There is nothing horrible but, they have some finish issues as you can assume on a 50 year old piece of furniture.

This is the left table

Here is the right table.
They both look pretty nice, right?  I could probably leave them as is, with a little cleaning, and double my money.  But... "dum, dum, dum" (cue ominous music)

The finish on the left table is pretty good with just a small spot of wear.  Unfortunately this table has a small crack on the front of the second tier and a fine crack on the top tier.  I'm hoping that the crack of the 2nd tier is just in the finish and that the top tier crack is a board joint.

The table on the right has the most wear but no cracks.
Yup, A couple more Hey Wake refinishing projects for the summer.  It's going to be a sandy summer, with no beach in sight, folks.

  1. Great find. I love Heywake, but have only found a couple of pieces at the thrifts.

    1. I have not found any HW at the thrifts; I pulled these out of a furniture resale shop, my big score was off of a Craigslist ad and the other side table was from an antique mall.

  3. I'm sure you already know, but these tables were made from 1947-1949. I love the lines and have never seen one before viewing your pics and haven't had the pleasure to refinish one so far! Not sure what you had to spend to acquire, but I would definetely refinish. If you follow my blog, you may get some pointers on how to proceed...Shoot me an e-mail off line if you need some advise!

    1. Yeah, I know I'll have to refin these. I'm surprised that you have not seen or refined a 304 before.

  4. Still looking for a match to my single 304! I may end up just selling the one. Of course...as soon as I do...

    1. I remembered that you were looking for one to complete your set; you better hold onto your 304, you know one will pop up.

  5. Congrats on the find. It's always great when you can hold out and get something at a reduced price.
